¿WHAT IS THE ECOWHALE?
It is a sculpture in the form of a whale, which also serves as a repository for plastic waste. It has a capacity of 700 litres and its objective is to provide the general public a vessel in which to deposit plastic waste found and collected from the sea and beaches. The plastic is deposited through the mouth of the whale and the amount of plastic collected in the “Ecowhale” can be seen from outside, which helps to raise awareness of the damage that this non-biodegradable waste causes in the marine habitat, in the species which inhabits this habitat and finally in humans through consumption.
Two EcoWhales have been installed in Tarifa: one in the harbour and another on the seafront at Cardenal Cisneros Street. The second one was inaugurated as part of the program of the event TarifaPlasticFree, an initiative promoted by Nereide and the Council of Tarifa.
This project was presented by the Council of Tarifa and the Association Crossing the Straits (ACNEG), and the initiative also involves the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras, the Association of Entrepreneurs of Tarifa and Nereide.
